When I go to system and then to the remote tab, there isn't an option for the
remote desktop, only for remote assistance. How can I change that?

Is Windows XP Home Edition installed on your computer? That would account for
the absence of Remote Desktop. That feature would be available if you had XP
Professional. Note: If you're not sure what version of XP is installed on your
computer right click My Computer and select Properties from the menu. The
version will be listed on the General page.

Here are a couple of alternatives to consider if you are trying to connect to
your XP HE computer remotely.

UltraVNC
