I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2. I'm not sure when this started but I went
into MSConfig, startup tab, to prevent a program from starting up on bootup. I unchecked the program and clicked Apply and got the message, 'An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes'. I am the administrator and was logged on as such. I clicked OK and exited MSConfig. When I went back in, the program that I had unchecked, was unchecked. So it did work even though I got that message. Any ideas why I am getting the access denied message and how to remove it? Thanks in advance. -- Mike Stevens |

Hi Mike Stevens,
The answer is simple. You have McAfee Internet Security Program installed. Uninstall McAfee programs and the problem goes away. Leave it in and the warnings continue. -- thecreator "Stevens" <Stevens@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9EACBCA3-3B3A-4B08-80B7-DB599C0B54B3@microsoft.com... >I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2. Hi Mike Stevens
I have exactly the same proplem with MSconfig that you do and I am not running McAfee - my virus software is AVG. Have you had any luck fixing the problem? Good morning Dick,
Not really but it is working. The guy that replied to me about the problem being McAfee was apparently correct. If I disable my McAfee Online Access Scan I can make changes to the startup in MSConfig with no error messages. But if the Online Access Scan is enabled I still get the error messages but the changes do take. ??? So, since I am able to make the changes I want I just leave my Online Access Scan enabled and put up with the apparently erroneous error messages. You may try disabling your AVG software and give it a try. Good luck. -- Mike Stevens "Dick Scheibe" wrote: > Hi Mike Stevens > I have exactly the same proplem with MSconfig that you do and I am not > running McAfee - my virus software is AVG. Thanks Mike
I'll try disabling AVG. If that works I'll contact them for help. They are usually very good. Dick "Stevens" wrote: > Good morning Dick, > > Not really but it is working. So I can ignore it, and just turn off the on-access antiviral program after bootup. --ron |
