I am currently running WinXP + SP2 which is installed on a hardware with
Mainboard Asus A8N SLI-Premium. Some month ago WinXP Service Pack 3 was released by MS. However within a short time it turned out that there are heavy problems with this SP 3 when applying it to a WinXP based on the mentioned Mainboard. In the meantime some bugfixes resp. work around were released (as far as I heard). Are these bugfixes/work around reliable? Is there a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to install SP3 WITH bugfix on an existing SP2 system? And how to fall back to SP2 in case that the upgrade is not working? Paolo |

Install a Linux Distro of your choice, I prefer Fedora, then if you really need a couple of Windows programs you can install VMware Server on top of Linux and then install a copy of XP on that and apply all of the updates including SP3. Because it's a VM you won't have any compatibility problems. You also won't have to worry about Windows security issues nearly as much. Just do all of your web access and e-mail from Linux and limit your web interactions on the Windows VM to a few trusted sites like Microsoft Updates and Intuit. Backing up VMs is trivial, just copy the directory somewhere. If Windows gets broken or infected all you have to do is restore your backup copy of the VM. |
