Default MS Excel, Cannot close this program

I am running Excel 2003, using Win XP Home Ed. I opened a file I have
been working on and when I went to save the file I could not. The SAVE
command in the FILE pulldown is grey and will not let me save. Then I
went to close the Excel program using the red X and nothing happens.

Help please!!

Loring

Surely you've tried other things too?

Tried the Save toolbar button?

Tried File > Exit, see if you get prompted to save before closing?

Try resetting your menu bar (Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab > select
Worksheet Menu Bar, click Reset and confirm).

Beyond this, try reposting into an appropriate group, such as
microsoft.public.excel.newusers - this one, and the clue is in the title, is
for Windows XP. If you do repost there, give more detail on what you mean by
"the red X", too.
