Default back up limitation

I want to back up my laptop onto a seperate hard disc and set up a daily back
up of data files.

I ran the xp backup utility and it was unable to do the back up. It said
the hard drive could only be used to back up 4G at a time and I have almost
30G on the drive.

What is the best way to proceed?

Thanks

A hard drive cannot save a "single" file larger than 4.x gig if it is
not formatted NTFS.
The built in backup utility is not the best. Or that's the word on
the street (newsgroups).
There are freeware CDBurnerXP, or pay programs like Acronis True Image
Home that do backups. ATI is a great program in my opinion and will
make full backup images of a hard drive, allowing you to recover from
any damaged HD or others. CDBurnerXP is maybe good for small file
lists. There are quite a few other options other than these. I use a
simple xcopy in a batch file to grab a few strategic settings on a daily
basis, outside of the ATI backup weekly...

Use Acronis True Image for complete System backup.

First off, I'm taking for granted that the hard drive you're trying to backup
your laptop to is an external drive. If it's a second internal hard drive your
not really creating a backup. You simply have a copy of all your files that will
be lost should any number of issues arise with your laptop.

Back to your question. The reason why you're running into that problem is
because the hard drive you're trying to store a back up file on is formatted
FAT32. The largest file that can be stored under FAT32 is 4GB.

Limitations of the FAT32 File System in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q314463

In order to store a file larger than 4GB the hard drive has to be formatted
NTFS. That's easily accomplished by right clicking on the hard drive in My
Computer and selecting Format from the menu. You can also format the drive
through the Disk Management console. Take a look at these articles for more
info.

How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000/

Format Backup Drives with NTFS
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/nason1.mspx

If there's data on it already that you want to preserve then you should opt to
use the Convert command to change the drive from FAT32 to NTFS. To do that you
would open up a command prompt window (Start -> Run ->cmd.exe) and enter this
command where X represent the drive letter where you want to store your backup
file.

convert X: /fs:ntfs

Here are a couple of articles on the subject.

Good luck
