Default Comcast, MS Outlook settings???

I use Comcast, Windows XP, SP #3, and both Windows Live mail and Outlook.

All works fine EXCEPT in Outlook.

My incoming says: mail.comcast.net
My Outgoing: smtp.comcast.net

But I can not send things out.

Can anyone help?

BTW Comcast says it should work. But it does not.

You have to use port 587 for sending emails.
Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express?
Comcast's webpage has an FAQ on how to set each one up.
Since you said you're using Outlook, here's the instructions;

1.Open Outlook 2003, select Tools from the top menu, and then E-mail
Accounts... from the pull down list.

2. In the E-mail category, select View or change existing e-mail
accounts and click the Next button to continue.

3. Select your Comcast.net E-Mail account, and then click the
Change button.

4. On the Internet E-mail Settings page, click the More
Settings... button located in the bottom right corner of the window.

5. Select the Outgoing Server tab, and put a check in the box
labelled My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Also,
select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

6. Click on the Advanced tab and in the Outgoing server (SMTP)
field, delete the current value in this field and type in the value
587.

7. Press the OK button to return to the previous menu. At this
point, you can test your settings by clicking the Test Account
Settings... button. If everything is configured properly, each of the
tests will have a green check mark next to them. If any of the tests
fail, go back and make sure that each setting is configured correctly.

8. After you close the Test Account Settings window, click Next
and then Finish. You are now configured to use port 587 to send e-mail
with Outlook 2003.

Brian, thanks a lot.
That is exactly how I have everything. I even printed out your instructions
and checked it again and again. It is just as you suggest.

Yet - the Test button immediately comes up that it cannot find the Incoming
or Outgoing Comcast.

I am at a loss.

Hello:

Try checking your firewall(s) to see if they are blocking.

Also, please consider bottom posting.

Best wishes and regards to you.

That test button is famous for not being reliable. Do a test by
sending yourself an email.

I checked firewall. A OK. Even manually added MS Outlook as permissible
program. Still does not work.

I tried that too. Does not work.

Everything in Windows Live Mail works. Just not in Outlook.

1.) What version of Microsoft Outlook are you using?

2.) What is the error message, if any, you receive?

3.) Brian's post above is excellent. If you're using M.S. Outlook
2003, use your browser to look at:

<http://help.comcast.net/content/faqtree/internet/6f4541ab-5423-47fb-a700-10806518e4d7#b2aa4a3a-53eb-4730-832f-89764b6a03b9>

If you're *not* using M.S. Outlook 2003, drill down through:

<http://help.comcast.net/content/faqtree/internet/6f4541ab-5423-47fb-a700-10806518e4d7>

Of particular interest is that you're trying to get POP3 email and that
your system "listens" to "mail.comcast.net" on port 110,

and

your system "sends" towards "smtp.comcast.net" on port 587. Your
username should not be followed by "@comcast.net".

4.) If these settings continue to fail, we can try having you send
on the older default port 25 instead of port 587. However, you
would be best using port 587 in the end.

Let us know how things go.

It seems to me that I've read that totally deleting the account and
starting from scratch can sometimes get things sorted out.
