Default Can't run defrag, scandsk or chkdsk on Windows XP cpu

I attempted to defrag my home PC and I got an Abort error that told me to run
either SCANDSK or CHKDSK on C:. When I attempted that, it could not find
either program. I am up to date on all updates. Anyone know how to fix
this? If you do, please keep it simple as I am not a techie person.
Thank you,
Elaine

Hi E.You may have a virus or spyware. You can try to restore your pc.Click
start,all programs,accessories,system tools.You will see system restore.When
you click on it,it will show restore to an earlier date.Click yes it will
bring you to a window that has a calender. The large numbers are the dates you
can restore to.Pick a date you know it was working proper.Click on the date
you want.It will proceed to restore your pc to that date.Should rectify the
problem.Hope this helps.TERRY.

Elaine

Can you please provide the complete and exact error message when you try
to run chkdsk?

Run Disk CleanUp and then try running chkdsk again.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Are there any Warning and Error Reports in the System Log of Event
Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Without seeing the entire error message, I can only say that Scandisk is not
an XP program. This name was used by Windows 9x. Its replacement is
Chkdsk.
So, the message might well be bogus.

However, on an XP system, Scandsk should not exist, and Chkdsk should be
located in \windows\system32.
