In these circumstances you might be better doing a clean install, as (unless
you bought from a trusted Power Seller) you have no way of knowing what malware or other trash might be on it. To get into it, I would suggest trying rebooting , pressing F8 at startup and selecting Safe mode. You may then find you can logon as Administrator. Otherwise, the Linux-based "NT Password Editor CD" usually works. http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ "skirambler" wrote: > just got a laptop from ebay, when i switch it on the ex log on box appears and > say user in top box and password in bottom, problem is a password did not come > with it anyone help me to open xp |

Anyway, it's a moot point. With second-hand computers, perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, but especially if acquired from a stranger, your wisest course of action would definitely be to format the hard drives and start fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |

(I'd say "especially from eBay", but really - it could be from your mother/brother/grandfather) - you should wipe it and use whatever method available to you to install from scratch. Then *you* know what is on it and so on. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
