Default User disappears from remote desktop users group

Has anyone seen a situation where a users account disappears from the remote
desktop group on the computer thus denying them access? As a part of our
standard setup for every PC each user is allowed to remote into the PC in
their cube so the user account is added when they start, or change machines.

Periodically, usually after a patch tuesday, I will get a call from someone
with VPN troubles and the issue turns out to be they were not in this group.
(And they had logged in just a few days previous)

So help the raging debate in my office and tell me if you've ever seen this
kind of activity before.
