Default change brightness on battery?

Just got a new hp/compaq laptop and I'm amazed by the drop in display
brightness when it goes to battery - ie, when you pull the power lead out.
My old Thinkpad used to drop - to, I guess, 60 or 70%, but this one seems to
drop down to 25% or something. Really dim. Is this normal? Have I got a dud?
Or am I being really dumb in not knowing what to do about it? I've tried the
Help section and got nowhere. I've tried the display and power sections in
control panel with no success. Is this an XP thing, or a laptop thing?
Am I missing something obvious? Or might I have bought a pup?
Any thoughts much appreciated.

Alan

Default Re: change brightness on battery?

On my laptop, I like this... Saves a lot of battery power. Hwever, it is
in my case (a Dell laptop) fully controllable, using as far as I
remember (do not work at the laptop at the moment) Fn-arrow-up (increase
light) and Fn-arrow-down (decrease light). It will remember the
settings, so adjust once to your preferred setting and it will stay this
way (or adjust as often as you like).

Normally, I prefer dimmed during travel (battery life) and full on when
moving in the office, as I know I will put it in the docvking station to
recharge somewhere that day anyhow.
