Default Direct3D problems

Hello all
I recently bought a copy of Deus Ex 2 - Invisible War, brand new still
shrinkwrapped.
Tried to run, got black screen, then black window top left of screen,
window disappeared, game didnt run,no error messages, explorer crashed
and the list of programs pinned to the start menu were duplicated.
Then, if I selected a 3D screensaver, when it started the screen
flashed continually and I could not get rid of the screensaver and go
back to the desktop without a complete reboot. Also in the list of
screensavers the preview window gave a message No Preview Available
for all of the 3D ones.

I ran DXDIAG with the following results for the Direct3D tests :
Direct3D 7 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

I downloaded the latest DirectX installation from Microsoft,
directx_nov2007_redist.exe and installed this. It made no difference,
still the same problems with Direct3D.

Can anyone help and tell me how to repair DirectX without a complete
reinstall of XP.

XP Pro sp2, Radeon 9600XT 256 Mb ram with latest drivers, 1Gb system
Ram, 80Gb Maxtor 6Y080P0 master hdd 52.1Gb free, 250Gb Maxtor 7L250R0
secondary hdd 221 Gb free, Athlon 2800 XP running at 2085 MHz

TIA
Stuart

Problem solved, it was due to the new graphics drivers. I installed
the previous version, dated 17/12/2006 and now all seems well.
