Default IE6 - multiple instances in Task Manager

I have noticed that when I open IE6 it appears in Task Manager as
iexplore.exe.

When I close IE6, the instance stays in the task manager.

If I open IE again another new instance appears in IE6. If I close that
one, I end up with two phantom instances of iexplore.exe. I can close
them from there, .... but what gives?

I have run AVG anti-virus and Ad-Aware (and always run a firewall), and
as has always been the case, found nothing but Internet cookies.

Is this the way IE6 works in Windows XP?

I swear I have been researching this for two days before now, but as
some corollary of Murphy's law (I presume) I found the reason within
minutes of posting this.

It was the Yahoo toolbar. I removed that and now IE opens one instance
of itself, and then properly closes itself when I tell it to.

Thanks for the help ô¿Ô¬
