Default Keyboard equivalent of mouse click

Is there a keyboard equivalent for a left mouse button click?
The button on the mousepad on my Acer laptop makes quite a loud clicking
noise, and it really annoys my wife when she's in the same room. If there
was an alternative, such as Alt + some key, this would be extremely useful.
Phil.

Since you mentioned laptop, you could tap your touchpad.

Enter does not do the same thing as clicking the mouse button, except in a
very lmited way in some applications. What I'm look for is a key that I can
press that is equivalent to pressing the left mouse button. i.e. select
whatever is under the mouse cursor.

Autohotkey has a script that emulates up to 5 mouse buttons after
activating with the scroll lock key.

Search in the Help file for "mouse click".

That's true. I could try that, thanks for the suggestion.
I'd still be interested in a keyboard alternative though.

Phil.
