I am interested in Kubuntu linux but I don't know about installing it, except
overwriting XP, which I don't want to do. I have two hard drives, the first one it too small so I'm wondering if I could create a small 20/25/30gb partion on the bigger 2nd drive but would I have to reformat the drive to partion it? If yes, how would I go about partioning it, is there some Windows utility to do such thing? Thanks in advance. |

You cannot re-partition a drive from within Windows withour total data loss.
Partition Magic for one will do it - purchase required. Google search will show others. You can also try using Wubi installer. It is an easier way to dual boot
Windows and Ubuntu. Read up on it here. http://wubi-installer.org/ It basically creates a virtual disk on your machine. In your case you can specify your spare disk as the place you want it to install it. Hopes this helps. Jerry is correct about using Partition Magic but Linux has a few free
Partition programs. You probably have just one partition ( Primary ) now on the bigger 2nd hard drive. You will have to slice that up into at least two more partitions, one for your swap file ( page file) and one for root. The swap file could be just 2G. The root should be at least 5G. You could make them both Primary partitions. You are allowed 4. Grub the Linux Boot Loader will during the Kubuntu install add your WinXP to the boot menu automatically. I like GParted or Partition Logic. I'll try Wubi first, as that seems the easiest way to install Kubuntu (If it only installs Ubuntu, then I'll just install the KDE interface in Ubuntu). If that doesn't work, then I'll look more into partioning. Thanks for all your replies. |

Would you believe it.
Total loss of display yesterday. Flashing red lights as soon as the PC was switched on But the monitor was still displaying its auto test data when disconnected from the PC and it hadn't given off any of those weird smells associated with electrical faults prior to failing totally when attached to the PC so I thought I'd take a closer look at the other suggested suspect, the graphics card. I periodically give the PC innards a blast and a vacuuming but I've never dismantled anything before. I'm glad I did tonight because when I pulled the card out I found that the fan and fin assembly was choked with dust. A judicious but thorough blast through with a high pressure line and everything is working perfectly. Thankfully the Sparkle GeForce 6600 obviously has some sort of cut-out to deal with overheating. Everything now fine. 10/10 and 2 team points to Malke! |
