Default USB Problem

My Windows XP Home edition no longer can read my USB stick(s).
Yet the stick(s) work on other computers.
Trouble shooter says the device is working ok but looking at properties it
says the file format is "RAW" and wants to reformat the stick. Even if I say
OK it comes back and says it cannot format it.
I Have tried the stick in another USB port that IS working a Ext. hard drive
but it still does not work.
I also tried a MMcard in card slot and it cannot be read either.
I have tried deleting the USB drivers and rebooting. When I do this it sees
New Hardware and loads the drivers but the same problem exists
Does this mean I have a problem with my USB driver software (USB Hub
controller?)
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Yes, it could be the USB Controller on the Motherboard that has gone
flaky. My motherboard is five years old and I had
to get a USB 2.0 PCI Card which was fairly cheap. Did you try going
into Device Manager>USB Controllers and expanding and selecting each one rt.
clicking and choosing Uninstall. Then restart and let XP reinstall them.

Is this USB port on the card slot reader?
