I tried to install SP3, but it froze my computer so badly that I couldn't
even boot in safe mode. After removing it (per instructions found on Microsoft's site), my Firewall no longer runs and I was unable to reinstall it. I've tried many different solutions, such as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329637 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074/en-us, as well as "winsock reset", etc., but none work. When I try to reinstall it using the info in the various knowledgebases, I usually get an error saying "This application has failed to start because dot3api.dll was not found. Re0installing the application may fix this problem." I do not know what application to reinstall and I cannot find any info on the dot3api.dll. Any ideas? Thanks! |

See if registering dot3api.dll fixes this issue.
Start > Run > type in regsvr32 dot3api.dll Click OK or press Enter Show hidden files, folders, and system files: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp dot3api.dll in WINDOWS\system32 should be at Version 5.1.2600.5512 after SP3 is installed. Locate it, right click it, and choose Properties, then click the Version tab to confirm. Also, check the WINDOWS\system32\dllcache to confirm that both copies of dot3api.dll is on the same Version level. *** Was the installed antivirus actively monitoring the system when SP3 was installed ? *** MowGreen [MVP 2003-2008] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== Marc wrote: > I tried to install SP3, but it froze my computer so badly that I couldn't > even boot in safe mode. Has anyone found a solution to this? I've got the same problem on 2 computers:
Info. This is an IBM Lenovo T60 that took Windows XP SP3, then Blue Screened. I found a MS KB article and removed SP3 and the machine run fines unless you try to remotely connect to it, edit any network info, or get the IP address of the machine. It gives the Error Dot3api.dll not found. I've searched my other XP SP2 machines and that file isn't on any of them. Thanks! "TCEdmon" wrote: > MowGreen, > I have the same problem. Re-registering the file does nothing.
